Aonishiki Makes History as First Ukrainian to Capture Emperor’s Cup

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a groundbreaking achievement, Danylo Yavhusishyn, known in the sumo world as Aonishiki, seized the Emperor’s Cup at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament held in Fukuoka, Japan, on Sunday. At the age of 21, he etched his name in history as the first Ukrainian wrestler to clinch a top-tier sumo title, triumphing over Mongolian yokozuna Hoshoryu in a dramatic final.

Aonishiki’s impressive win brings him nearer to a promotion from sekiwake to ozeki, the sport's esteemed second-highest class. However, he emphasized that his thoughts aren't on promotion just yet; he’s savoring the joy of his first major victory. Celebrating this milestone, he took part in the traditional sumo ceremony of raising a sea bream, a good fortune symbol, which he described as a thrilling new experience.

Originally hailing from Vinnytsia, Ukraine, Aonishiki embarked on his sumo career at seven, becoming a national champion by seventeen. Following the 2022 Russian invasion, he fled with his family to Germany and relocated to Japan in April to chase his sumo dreams.

After his extraordinary win, Aonishiki reached out to his parents in Germany to share the joyous news, expressing heartfelt thanks, saying, “It’s all thanks to you.” His mother was moved to tears, while his father, though more reserved, was equally touched. A wave of congratulations from friends and fellow Ukrainians followed.

Additionally, Aonishiki conveyed his happiness in being able to honor his stablemaster's dedication and guidance. After celebrating his victory, he is now concentrating on the impending challenges ahead.

This significant victory not only symbolizes a personal triumph for Aonishiki but also represents a moment of pride for Ukraine, as he shines a spotlight on the nation in the realm of sumo wrestling.
