An individual from Australia, identified as Johnson Wen, faced deportation from Singapore after serving a nine-day sentence for rushing towards music icon Ariana Grande at the Asian premiere of the musical "Wicked: For Good" on November 13, 2025. The incident unfolded when Wen leaped over a barricade and unexpectedly placed his arm around Grande, startling both the singer and the gathered crowd.
Prompt action was taken by security personnel, with Grande’s co-star Cynthia Erivo swiftly intervening to shield her. Guards removed Wen from the vicinity shortly thereafter. The astonishing moment was captured in viral videos, where Wen was seen smiling and waving at onlookers following the brief encounter.
Within hours, Wen was apprehended and charged with public nuisance. Singapore’s District Judge Christopher Goh indicated that Wen's conduct was "attention seeking" and pointed to a history of similar disturbances in the past. Despite the seriousness of the charge, Wen received a comparatively light sentence of nine days in jail, well below the maximum three-month sentence or a fine of $1,500.
After fulfilling his sentence, Johnson Wen was sent back to Australia, with Singapore's immigration authorities imposing a ban on his return.
During court proceedings, Wen expressed remorse, acknowledging his wrongful actions and vowing not to repeat them. Despite the incident, the premiere for "Wicked: For Good" successfully proceeded, with the cast gathering around Ariana Grande before walking the yellow carpet.
