In the early hours of Wednesday, a catastrophic fire broke out at Bakarganj Market in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, annihilating hundreds of shops and inflicting severe financial damage on local vendors. The blaze erupted around 4 AM, casting thick smoke clouds across the vicinity, alarming residents and prompting urgent firefighting responses.
Witnesses reported alarming flames swiftly engulfing various stalls, leading them to alert firefighters without delay. Although multiple fire tenders were dispatched, the ferocity of the flames and thick smoke hindered containment efforts, ultimately leading to the destruction of numerous temporary and permanent shops.
Footage from the scene depicted the market in flames as firefighters worked diligently to subdue the blaze amid a crowd of anxious onlookers. Authorities are currently investigating the fire's origin, which has yet to be determined.
This incident closely follows another significant fire in Kanpur just a day prior at the Anandeshwar Cold Storage in Bara, which resulted in the loss of a substantial potato stock. Fire officials highlighted the lack of a rear exit as a major barrier to combating the cold storage fire effectively.
Shopkeepers in Bakarganj Market voiced their despair over the devastating loss of their businesses. Many estimate their total losses to be around ₹50-60 lakh. Shahzade, an affected shopkeeper, lamented, “A fire broke out here, but we don't understand how it happened. My shop is completely gone.”
Another trader, Usha Rathore, recounted, “We were asleep when we were alerted to the fire. Initially, there was no fire brigade; we had to call them ourselves. Everything has been lost. My shop held goods worth ₹13-14 lakh. I suspect foul play—it’s hard to believe all shops could burn so easily. I seek justice.”
Ajay, who owns two shops, remarked, “By the time I got there, all the shops were already destroyed. I had inventory worth ₹50-60 lakh, and it’s all gone.”
Authorities have vowed to continue investigations into the fire's cause and assist the affected shopkeepers. In the meantime, local residents remain vigilant, hoping for prompt actions to avert similar tragedies in the future.
