Bald Eagle Drops Cat, Startling Driver on NC Highway

Bald Eagle Drops Cat, Startling Driver on NC Highway

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

While driving on a bustling highway in North Carolina, a driver experienced an astonishing moment when a cat unexpectedly fell through their windshield. The bewildered driver later reported to 911 that a bald eagle overhead had released the cat.

This remarkable incident took place along US Route 74 in Swain County, near Bryson City and adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. On what seemed like any ordinary morning, the unusual event unfolded without warning.

In the recorded call to 911, the startled driver conveyed their disbelief, saying, “You might think I’m joking, but a bald eagle just dropped a cat onto my windshield.” The cat's impact shattered the passenger-side glass and left the driver in a state of shock.

The driver recounted how they were simply driving when they suddenly observed something plummeting towards them. Before they could react, the cat struck the windshield violently, causing glass to scatter inside the vehicle. Thankfully, the driver emerged unhurt.

The dispatcher reassured the driver and expressed belief in their incredible tale. They were informed that a nearby witness had also observed the eagle carrying the cat prior to the drop, and this individual called it “the craziest thing” they had encountered on the road.

Sadly, the cat was later found on the roadside and had not survived the fall. The driver confirmed this to the dispatcher.

This extraordinary event underscores the behavior of bald eagles, which are powerful birds of prey. Experts note that these birds may drop their captured prey if they become unbalanced or startled while flying, as likely occurred in this scenario.

There's a history of bald eagles creating unexpected scenarios in the U.S. For instance, in 2020, one attacked a government drone over a lake in Michigan, believing it to be a threat or potential prey.

Wildlife officials report that the bald eagle population in the U.S. has increased significantly, with approximately 316,700 bald eagles present today. Once on the endangered species list, they have made a noticeable recovery thanks to successful conservation efforts.

This event on US Route 74 has left the driver rattled but unharmed, and it stands out as one of the most bizarre animal-related road incidents reported in recent times.
