IV Bishkek International Film Festival Kicks Off in Kyrgyzstan

Post by : Shakul

The IV Bishkek International Film Festival officially opened on June 7, welcoming filmmakers and cinema lovers from various regions and beyond. Inaugurated by Adylbek Kasymaliev, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, the festival marks a significant milestone in enhancing the nation's cultural and creative landscape.

Speaking on behalf of President Sadyr Japarov and the Cabinet, Kasymaliev highlighted Kyrgyzstan's commitment to a comprehensive strategy for bolstering cinematography and creative sectors. He pointed out that film serves as a vital means to safeguard national identity and elevate the country's standing globally.

The Prime Minister reported a remarkable increase in financial support for the film industry, with state funding rising from 80 million soms four years ago to an expected 928 million soms in 2026. This robust investment underlines the government’s pledge to establish a more formidable and competitive film industry.

Kasymaliev referred to the rich history of Kyrgyz cinema, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, a time recognized for its achievements and known as the “Kyrgyz Miracle.” He believes that the current wave of directors, writers, and producers possesses the skills and insights necessary to uphold this tradition.

Guided by the cultural program “National Inspiration – World Heights,” the festival aims to lay down a pathway for innovative cultural practices and creative development. Officials anticipate this initiative will cultivate fresh opportunities for filmmakers while enhancing Kyrgyzstan’s cultural footprint internationally.

Running until June 12, the 2026 Bishkek International Film Festival showcases an array of world and international premieres, with a notable emphasis on Central Asian cinema that captures local narratives and cultural identities.

In addition to film presentations, the festival offers workshops, discussions, and networking opportunities for industry professionals, aiming to evolve into a key cultural hub in Central Asia, encouraging global partnerships and inspiring future filmmakers across the region.
