Fraser and Weisz to Reprise Their Roles in The Mummy 4

Post by : Meena Hassan

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, the original stars of the 1999 The Mummy, are confirmed to return for a new instalment, The Mummy 4. The project is being overseen by directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who previously worked on Ready or Not (2019) and helped revive the Scream series in 2022.

The 1999 film followed Fraser’s adventurous treasure hunter teaming with Weisz’s archaeologist in 1930s Egypt to stop a vengeful, supernatural priest. The reboot was a box-office success that established both leads as major Hollywood names; they reunited for The Mummy Returns (2001), while Weisz was absent from the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).

Universal’s later attempt to relaunch the franchise with Tom Cruise in 2017 failed to build momentum and derailed plans for the studio’s so-called Dark Universe.

Fraser has enjoyed a career revival in recent years, earning an Academy Award for The Whale (2022) and appearing in films such as No Sudden Move (2021), Killers of the Flower Moon, and Brothers. He also featured in the Japanese title Rental Family, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Weisz has maintained a strong profile since The Mummy, with an Oscar for The Constant Gardener and a BAFTA for The Favourite. Her recent credits include Melina Vostokoff in Marvel’s Black Widow and a lead role in the Amazon series Dead Ringers (2023).

Their confirmed return for The Mummy 4 reunites the franchise’s original leads and signals a bid to restore the adventurous tone that defined the series over two decades ago.
