The anticipation for BTS's comeback tour has ignited an incredible wave of enthusiasm among fans in Mexico, where tickets have quickly disappeared following a four-year hiatus for the globally renowned K-pop group. President Claudia Sheinbaum has taken the unusual step of reaching out to South Korea's authorities, advocating for additional concerts to accommodate the eager fanbase.
On Monday, Sheinbaum disclosed that she sent a letter to the South Korean president, expressing her hope for more BTS performances in Mexico. Although a response is pending, she assured fans that their hopes remain high. Currently, the group is slated for three performances in Mexico City in May as part of their extensive 79-date world tour, with tickets vanishing in less than 40 minutes according to local reports.
The astonishing interest has led to grievances, with fans blaming ticketing services and resale platforms for utilizing dynamic pricing models that inflate costs significantly. Official ticket prices ranged from 1,800 to 17,800 pesos, but secondary market listings soared to as high as 92,100 pesos.
In response to the situation, Mexico's consumer protection agency has intervened, penalizing resale sites for what it termed exploitative practices during sales. Officials estimate that about one million enthusiastic fans vied for just 150,000 available tickets, underlining the massive appeal of BTS in the country.
Ranked as the fifth-largest K-pop market worldwide, Mexico has seen streaming of the genre increase by over 500% in the last five years. Despite the requests from local promoters, BTS's busy tour schedule continues to limit the addition of extra performances.
The group hasn't released music together since mid-2022 as they concentrated on solo endeavors and completed compulsory military service. Their comeback tour kicks off in April in South Korea, extending across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, with forecasts estimating total revenue could exceed $1 billion.
