Hyderabad — A string of serious road accidents involving state-run RTC and private buses in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh has intensified concerns over road safety in the region.
In the most recent incident, one person died and eight others were hurt after a private travel bus struck a truck near Dhamajipalli in Andhra Pradesh’s Sri Sathya Sai district early Tuesday. The Jabbar Travels vehicle, carrying 27 passengers from Hyderabad to Bengaluru, collided with the truck while negotiating a turn.
Police said the injured were taken to a nearby hospital and authorities have opened an inquiry into the circumstances of the crash.
The latest crash follows a deadly bus fire near Kurnool on October 24, when a V Kaveri Travels coach ran over a motorcycle and a resulting spark and fuel leak set the vehicle ablaze, killing 19 passengers.
Separately, on Monday night a private bus overturned in Eluru district, killing 25-year-old software engineer V. Praveen Babu, who was travelling to Hyderabad for a new job; ten other travellers were reported injured.
Also on Monday morning, an RTC bus and a tipper truck carrying construction material collided head-on in Rangareddy district, killing 19 people. The crash happened near Mirzaguda in Chevella mandal, about 60 km from Hyderabad, and several passengers were trapped under gravel after the impact.
Early Tuesday, 15 passengers sustained injuries when an RTC bus struck a tractor on Renukunta Bridge in Karimnagar district. Those hurt were promptly moved to a government hospital for treatment.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar voiced serious concern over the repeated incidents and urged state governments to make road safety a priority, including public awareness efforts.
“These repeated bus accidents are alarming. The government must take strict steps to prevent such tragedies and ensure safer roads,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
With fatal crashes continuing across both states, officials face mounting pressure to review transport safety procedures, strengthen vehicle maintenance standards and tighten regulations for long-distance bus operators.
