Canada is bracing for a winter filled with uncertainty, as meteorologists warn that the conflicting influences of climate change and a weak La Niña are creating challenges for long-term forecasts.
Experts indicate that the clearest signals are emerging from the eastern Arctic, where predictions suggest temperatures between December and February will likely exceed seasonal averages. This warming pattern is expected to impact regions in Nunavut, areas near Hudson Bay, and the northern parts of Quebec and Labrador.
Conversely, some small pockets in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nova Scotia may see colder-than-normal temperatures, while parts of British Columbia’s coastline, eastern Nova Scotia, and portions of Newfoundland are anticipated to experience near-average conditions.
However, most of western and central Canada—including B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and significant areas of Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces—are lacking clear trends. Meteorologists warn that the absence of strong signals means this winter could go any way.
This uncertainty arises from the conflicting influences of La Niña's typical cooling and the ongoing warming trends from climate change. While early winter chill in western Canada aligns with La Niña, long-term warmth is overshadowing this effect, undermining forecast reliability.
Researchers also highlight that unusually warm ocean conditions could potentially intensify winter storms, especially those emerging from the Pacific and traveling across the Prairies toward the central regions.
Precipitation forecasts suggest an increase in snowfall and rainfall in northern and western areas, particularly Alberta, Saskatchewan, B.C., Yukon, and the Northwest Territories, while confidence for the remainder of the country remains low.
Simultaneously, climate scientists are enhancing Canada’s rapid weather attribution system to assess extreme precipitation events, such as heavy rainfall, freezing rain, and snow. Recent studies indicate nearly every significant precipitation event recorded since mid-2025 has been made more likely due to climate change driven by human activities.
The upgraded system aims to assist Canadians in better understanding how global warming is influencing daily weather conditions and the severe storms increasingly impacting communities and infrastructure nationwide.
