Canada Urges Quick Release of Jimmy Lai

Post by : Meena Hassan

Canada has voiced strong objections to the politically charged conviction of Hong Kong's pro-democracy journalist and businessman Jimmy Lai, demanding his urgent release.

The 78-year-old Lai, who founded the now-defunct Apple Daily, was convicted of colluding with foreign entities to jeopardize national security and publishing seditious content under Hong Kong’s strict national security law imposed by China. He has been incarcerated for five years waiting for the trial and now faces the possibility of life behind bars.

Anita Anand, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, has expressed serious concerns regarding the diminishing rights and freedoms in Hong Kong, labeling Lai’s trial as “politically motivated.”

According to family members, Lai’s health has significantly declined during his time in solitary confinement. His daughter Claire has stated that her father’s principal wish is to reunite with family and live peacefully.

International figures, including leaders from the U.S. and U.K., have shared similar concerns and are urging for Lai’s release on humanitarian grounds. Canadian activists are pushing Ottawa to implement tangible diplomatic measures, including sanctions against Hong Kong officials involved in political repression.

Lai’s case has emerged as a pivotal issue in the worldwide conversation surrounding press freedoms, human rights, and judicial independence in Hong Kong amid increasing Chinese influence.
