Indian aviation authorities are probing an incident involving an Air India Airbus A350 that experienced engine damage after ingesting a cargo container during taxiing at Delhi airport.
The flight, which was bound for New York, had to return to Delhi shortly after takeoff due to a temporary closure of Iranian airspace. After a safe landing, the plane was taxiing toward its parking area with around 240 passengers when the right engine encountered the container, which had fallen amid thick fog.
Reportedly, the container dropped from a ground vehicle working to transport cargo and luggage. The operator noticed the aircraft and departed, inadvertently leaving the container on the taxiway.
Aviation officials stated that the debris was promptly cleared from the path, and the aircraft was towed to a designated stand for inspection. Images from the scene indicate visible damage to the engine casing and fan blades.
This incident has raised alarms about ground safety protocols at airports across India. Previous audits have pointed out various safety issues, such as faded runway markings and inadequate maintenance.
Air India announced that the affected A350 is currently grounded for necessary repairs, warning that some long-haul flights, particularly to New York and London, might experience disruptions. The airline operates a total of six A350 jets on key international routes.
