ASEAN Talks Address Food Security Issues

ASEAN Talks Address Food Security Issues

Post by : Shakul

At the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry, Inspector-General Pongthai Taiyothin of Thailand took part in crucial discussions aimed at preparing for the upcoming Special ASEAN Ministers Meeting. The agenda was centered on the urgent food security issues plaguing the region.

Participants analyzed how ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, are impacting local agricultural systems. The rise in energy prices, along with interruptions in fertilizer supplies and increased logistics expenses, are severely undermining food production and stability in several ASEAN nations.

Thailand underscored its reliance on imported fertilizers, meeting nearly its entire domestic demand through imports. Consequently, global market fluctuations have resulted in soaring production costs and restricted access to vital agricultural inputs for local farmers.

In response, Thailand has launched a phased strategy to stabilize food production. The first steps include securing a reliable supply of fertilizers and advocating for their efficient use, such as promoting organic fertilizers to help curtail costs.

Immediate initiatives also involve the use of biofertilizers, precision agriculture technologies, and renewable energy approaches to boost efficiency. Plans for the medium term are focused on enhancing research and development, improving soil health, and embracing sustainable practices within the Bio-Circular-Green framework.

During the meeting, ASEAN member states shared insights regarding their national situations and deliberated on collective regional strategies. They reviewed frameworks like the ASEAN Emergency Food Reserve System to strengthen food security on a larger scale.

Thailand stressed the necessity of maintaining the flow of essential goods, including food and agricultural materials, while fostering enhanced multi-sector collaboration. The discussions are aimed at developing a robust regional food system that can effectively tackle present and future challenges.
