Singapore Changi Among World's Highest CO2 Airports

Post by : Shakul

Singapore Changi Airport has received an alarming ranking as one of the top ten most carbon-heavy airports globally, according to an international study focused on aviation emissions and sustainability.

The 2026 Airport Tracker report, released by Transport & Environment and ODI Global, identified Changi Airport as the ninth most carbon-intensive airport, producing about 14.3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2023.

This comprehensive analysis involved nearly 1,300 airports worldwide and utilized data from the International Council on Clean Transportation.

Researchers highlighted that the Asia-Pacific region is now the leading contributor to aviation-related carbon emissions, representing approximately 32% of the global share.

Jude Lee, regional director for Transport & Environment, emphasized the growing necessity for transparent emissions reporting as Singapore strives to enhance its position in sustainable aviation and green financing.

The report indicated that the top 100 airports accounted for nearly two-thirds of emissions from passenger flights, raising significant concerns regarding the ecological impact of major aviation hubs.

Experts have cautioned that international scrutiny of airports may intensify as the EU weighs the expansion of carbon pricing rules to encompass all international flights departing from its territories.

The study also pointed out that only a handful of airports have established credible long-term plans for achieving net-zero emissions concerning indirect aviation emissions.
