South Korea Records Second-Highest Current Account Surplus

Strong External Trade Performance

South Korea recorded a current account surplus of about $46.1 billion in August 2026, marking its second-highest monthly level on record. The latest data was released by the Bank of Korea on October 8, 2026.

Semiconductor Exports Drive Trade

The country's strong export performance played a major role in the latest result. Semiconductors remain one of South Korea's most important export industries, and improving global demand for chips has provided significant support to the country's trade position.

Exports Rise Sharply

Goods exports reached about $104.8 billion in August, while imports stood at around $57.99 billion. The large difference between exports and imports contributed to a goods trade surplus of approximately $46.81 billion.

Eight-Month Surplus

The current account surplus for the first eight months of 2026 reached about $279.2 billion. The figure represents a significant increase compared with the same period of the previous year and reflects the strength of South Korea's external trade.

Importance of the Semiconductor Industry

The semiconductor sector continues to have a major influence on South Korea's economic performance. The Bank of Korea has pointed to the semiconductor boom and its broader effects as an important factor supporting the country's growth outlook for 2026.

Economic Significance

A current account surplus generally means that a country is receiving more from its international transactions than it is paying out during a given period. For South Korea, the latest figures show the continuing importance of exports, particularly technology and semiconductor products, to the national economy.

What the Latest Data Shows

The August figures provide another indication of strong external demand for South Korean goods. With the current account surplus remaining above $40 billion for a third consecutive month, exports are continuing to play a central role in the country's economic performance.
