Kuala Lumpur Police Officers Face Charges in RM10,000 Extortion Allegations

Post by : Shakul

In a high-profile case, four police corporals from Kuala Lumpur have entered not guilty pleas regarding charges of extorting RM10,000 from a salesman. The men appeared before the Magistrate’s Court, denying all claims made against them.

The accused are identified as Mohd Al Hafis Sairudin, Mohd Azmi Mohd Ghozali, Muhamad Azlan Zakaria, and Muhammad Hanif Abdul Talib. They face charges under the Penal Code for allegedly coercing Danny Goh Ngee Guan by threatening him with a possible court fine exceeding RM50,000.

The alleged extortion occurred in an apartment located on Jalan Kepong, Sentul, on December 23, 2023. It is reported that the victim was pressured into paying RM10,000 due to the fear of legal repercussions.

This incident is classified under Section 384 of Malaysia’s Penal Code, which varies conditions for individuals indicted together under shared intent. If found guilty, the policemen could face severe penalties, including lengthy imprisonment, fines, or corporal punishment.

During the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa argued against bail, citing the gravity of the offense as a non-bailable one. In contrast, defense lawyer Ahmad Ikram Ab Halim emphasized that the accused have fully cooperated with the investigation and are crucial providers for their families.

Following careful consideration, Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad granted bail of RM8,000 for each officer, with strict conditions that include regular check-ins at a local police station and a ban on contact with witnesses or the complainant.

This case evokes important conversations about public trust and accountability within law enforcement. Legal proceedings will progress as evidence is presented before the court. The next update is scheduled for July 8, where further developments will be addressed.
