The ChatGPT app has recorded the highest growth in smartphone users in South Korea this year, according to a recent survey reported by Yonhap. The findings highlight the rapid rise in popularity of the generative AI platform among Korean mobile users.
Data from a sample survey of four million smartphone users, conducted by industry tracker Wiseapp Retail, showed that the number of ChatGPT app users increased by 196.6 percent in November compared to January. This made ChatGPT the fastest-growing app in the country during the period.
Other popular apps also reported user growth, but at much lower levels. Daiso Mall, the online shopping platform of discount retailer Daiso, ranked second with a growth rate of 31.9 percent. It was followed by beauty retailer Olive Young at 30.8 percent and Monino, a financial asset-management app linked to Samsung Group affiliates, at 28.1 percent.
In addition to leading in growth, ChatGPT also became the most-used smartphone app over the same period. The app recorded an average of 16.7 million monthly users, showing strong and consistent engagement.
Kakao Pay ranked second in usage with an average of 9.1 million users per month, while Olive Young followed closely with 8.6 million. The results reflect the growing influence of artificial intelligence apps in daily digital life and their rising role in the mobile app market.
