Christmas typically embodies joy and togetherness, but this year it held a poignant sense of remembrance for Samaira and Kiaan, the children of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur and actress Karisma Kapoor. Celebrating the holidays with the Pataudi family, the siblings chose to honor their father’s legacy in a touching manner.
Actor Kareena Kapoor Khan shared snapshots from the family’s festive gathering, highlighting a beautifully adorned Christmas tree with a decoration stating, “Christmas at the Pataudis.” One tender photograph captured Samaira and Kiaan from behind, showcasing them in matching jerseys from their father’s polo club. Kareena affectionately referred to them as her “Christmas angels,” a sentiment that resonated deeply with many.
The jerseys were particularly significant, representing Aureus Polo, the esteemed polo team established and led by Sunjay Kapur. The team gained acclaim by securing victories in leagues across India, the United States, and the United Kingdom. By wearing these jerseys, Samaira and Kiaan symbolized their connection to their father’s passion and unparalleled legacy during a time marked by his absence.
Tragically, Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12, 2025, at the age of 53 after collapsing during a match at the Guards Polo Club in Windsor, UK. Subsequent reports indicated that he suffered an anaphylactic shock after an accidental bee sting inside his mouth. His unexpected demise sent shockwaves through the realms of business, athletics, and beyond.
Sunjay’s personal life attracted considerable media attention. Initially wed to fashion designer Nandita Mahtani, he later married Karisma Kapoor in 2003, welcoming Samaira in 2005 and Kiaan in 2010. After enduring a protracted legal separation, they finalized their split in 2016. In 2017, he married Priya Sachdev, with whom he had a son named Azarius.
Following Sunjay Kapur’s passing, a legal dispute surfaced regarding his substantial estate. Karisma Kapoor approached the Delhi High Court, asserting that Sunjay’s will had been forged—claims that Priya Sachdev’s legal team vehemently denied. Concerns were also raised by Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, over the potential concealment of her son’s financial assets. The Delhi High Court recently concluded hearings in this case, reserving its decision, which will determine the future course of the inheritance battle.
In the midst of legal complexities and public intrigue, the image of Samaira and Kiaan donning their father’s polo jerseys stands out, evoking deep emotion. It captures how children honor their parents not merely through words but through small yet powerful gestures. This Christmas, their tribute exuded love and loss, highlighting a bond that perseveres even in the face of death.
