Chinese President Xi Jinping and senior Communist Party officials gathered in Beijing on Monday, October 26, 2026, for an important political meeting known as the fifth plenum. According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the gathering is being closely watched for indications of China’s future governance priorities and leadership direction.
Approximately 300 members of the ruling Communist Party’s Central Committee are attending the meeting. State media reports indicate that discussions will focus on strengthening internal party discipline, reducing corruption and improving the effectiveness and loyalty of officials. The gathering is being held behind closed doors under tight security, with limited information expected before its conclusion.

The fifth plenum takes place ahead of a major Communist Party congress scheduled for next year. According to the supplied report, Xi Jinping is widely expected to seek a historic fourth term, while the congress is also expected to involve changes among senior party leaders. Previous plenums have played an important role in consolidating Xi’s political authority.
Xi has led an extensive anti-corruption campaign for approximately 14 years, resulting in the removal of thousands of officials, including members of the Central Committee. However, the report says he remains concerned about officials who fail to implement central directives effectively. Party discipline and stronger supervision are therefore expected to remain central issues during the talks.
Ahead of the meeting, Chinese state media published an article based on a speech Xi delivered in January. In that speech, he criticised officials who publicly appear to follow central instructions but privately resist them. Analysts cited by AFP said the leadership is seeking greater efficiency and loyalty through tighter supervision and additional rules.
The anti-corruption campaign has also affected China’s military leadership. According to the report, five of the seven members of the Central Military Commission have been removed, while many military officials appointed to the Central Committee in 2022 have also been purged or have disappeared from public view. The meeting could lead to new military appointments, although decisions could be delayed until next year’s party congress.
The meeting comes as China faces continued economic challenges, including weak domestic spending and a prolonged crisis in the property sector. Uncertain political and economic relations with the United States are also adding pressure on Chinese leaders. Authorities are expected to release a summary of the meeting’s outcomes after the fifth plenum concludes on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
