In a significant legal action, China executed 11 individuals from the Ming family, a notorious criminal syndicate implicated in large-scale scams and illicit gambling in Myanmar. The Zhejiang provincial court issued sentences last September for grave crimes, including murder, illegal detention, and fraud.
The Ming family was a dominant force in Laukkaing, a small town bordering China, where they expanded criminal enterprises, transforming the area from a quiet locale into a bustling hub of casinos and vice. Their network ensnared thousands of Chinese individuals, who were trafficked to perpetrate scams on a global scale.
The downfall of the Ming family occurred in 2023, when ethnic militia groups took charge of Laukkaing amid the ongoing civil strife in Myanmar. These militias captured and handed over the Ming members to Chinese law enforcement. Accounts of victims, including a lesser-known Chinese actor misled into the scam operation, ignited public outrage in China, increasing scrutiny on Myanmar’s military government.
According to China's supreme court, the Ming family's activities generated over 10 billion yuan (approximately $1.4 billion) from 2015 to 2023, leading to the deaths of 14 Chinese nationals and many injuries. After rejecting all appeals, the court decided on executions to dismantle their perilous scam empire.
