Chinese Shenzhou-20 Crew Completes Third Spacewalk Successfully

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

China’s Shenzhou-20 space mission crew successfully completed their third extravehicular activity, or spacewalk, on Friday. The astronauts, Chen Dong, Chen Zhongrui, and Wang Jie, spent around six and a half hours outside the orbiting space station completing all the tasks assigned to them. This marked another important milestone for China’s growing presence in space.

Tasks Completed During the Spacewalk

During the spacewalk, the crew worked carefully and systematically on various important activities. They installed new space debris protection devices to help safeguard the station against damage from small objects floating in space. These protective devices are vital to ensure the safety of both the astronauts and the space station equipment.

Maintenance and Inspection Work

In addition to installing protective devices, the astronauts carried out inspection and maintenance of the station’s external equipment. Checking and maintaining external tools and machinery is an important part of space missions. It ensures that all systems work properly and helps prevent unexpected problems that could affect the space station’s functioning.

Support from Robotic Arm and Ground Team

The spacewalk was assisted by the station’s robotic arm, which helped the astronauts handle equipment and complete tasks more efficiently. The ground control team on Earth also guided the astronauts throughout the spacewalk. Communication with the ground team is crucial in space missions to ensure the astronauts’ safety and the success of their tasks.

Importance of the Spacewalks

Spacewalks, or EVAs, are critical for the maintenance, improvement, and expansion of space stations. Astronauts can install new equipment, repair existing systems, and ensure that the station is protected from potential hazards. Each successful spacewalk increases the knowledge and experience of the crew, helping prepare them for future missions and more complex tasks.

Achievements of Shenzhou-20 Mission

The Shenzhou-20 mission is a significant part of China’s space program. With the completion of their third spacewalk, the crew has demonstrated their capability to work efficiently and safely outside the station. These achievements highlight China’s growing expertise in human spaceflight and space station management.

Long March 10 Rocket Test

In addition to the spacewalk, China also tested its new-generation manned launch vehicle, the Long March 10 carrier rocket. The rocket successfully completed its first static ignition test today at the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in southern China’s Hainan Island Province. This is an important step in preparing the rocket for future missions that will carry astronauts and cargo into space.

Purpose of Long March 10

The Long March 10 is designed to carry astronauts and heavy equipment into orbit. The successful ignition test confirms that the rocket’s engines and fuel systems are working correctly. This is a critical part of China’s plan to expand its space capabilities, including sending humans and materials to space safely and reliably.

Significance for China’s Space Program

Both the successful spacewalk and the Long March 10 test demonstrate China’s commitment to advancing its space program. These achievements show that China is investing in technology, training astronauts, and improving its space station systems. Over time, these efforts will allow China to conduct more complex missions, contribute to international space research, and increase its presence in space.

Collaboration and Coordination

The Shenzhou-20 mission also highlights the importance of teamwork. The astronauts worked together during the spacewalk, while ground teams monitored their progress and provided guidance. Additionally, robotic systems like the station’s robotic arm played a key role in assisting the crew. Such coordination between humans, machines, and mission control is vital for the success of modern space missions.

Safety Measures in Space

Safety is always a top priority during spacewalks. The astronauts wear specially designed space suits that provide oxygen, temperature control, and protection from space hazards. Installing space debris protection devices is another measure to ensure the astronauts and the station remain safe. These steps reduce the risk of accidents and help maintain the station’s operation.

Future Plans for China’s Space Station

With Shenzhou-20’s achievements, China is preparing for more advanced missions. Future plans include additional spacewalks, installation of new modules, and improvements to the station’s living and working areas. The Long March 10 rocket will also play a key role in bringing more astronauts and cargo to the station. These plans show China’s long-term commitment to building a strong human presence in space.

Expanding China’s Space Expertise

Every successful spacewalk and rocket test helps China gain more experience in space technology. The Shenzhou-20 mission contributes valuable knowledge about how humans can live and work safely in orbit. It also provides opportunities to test new equipment, improve astronaut training, and strengthen ground support systems. This expertise is essential for the country’s future space exploration projects.

A Step Forward in Space Exploration

The completion of the third spacewalk by the Shenzhou-20 crew and the successful test of the Long March 10 rocket are important milestones for China’s space program. These achievements demonstrate the country’s growing capabilities in human spaceflight, space station maintenance, and rocket technology. By continuing these efforts, China is building a stronger presence in space and contributing to the global knowledge of human space exploration.
