Fire Erupts on Container Ship at Los Angeles Port, Emergency Measures Activated

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

An extensive fire ignited on a container vessel docked at the Port of Los Angeles on Friday evening, leading to a swift emergency intervention. Fire crews swarmed to the scene to quell the flames, which are believed to have initiated underneath the deck before escalating through the ship. A mid-deck explosion was also noted, with investigations underway to determine the cause.

Fortunately, all 23 crew members aboard were confirmed safe, with no injuries reported. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) verified that the fire originated from an electrical malfunction beneath the vessel's deck. Given the cargo's hazardous nature, LAFD's Hazardous Materials teams are vigilantly monitoring the surrounding air quality to mitigate safety risks.

The ship, identified as One Henry Hudson, spans 1,102 feet (336 meters) and operates under One Ocean Express, based in Singapore. Prior to its Los Angeles arrival, the vessel made scheduled visits to Japanese ports, including Kobe, Nagoya, and Tokyo. As of now, authorities are still investigating the fire's exact cause and its potential link to the ship’s hazardous cargo.

By around 7 PM local time, the fire had worsened, affecting multiple levels of the ship. Over 100 firefighters, alongside specialized teams, were involved in tackling the flames. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass confirmed the emergency’s scale and reassured residents and port personnel that all critical safety protocols were being followed.

The Port of Los Angeles, the busiest in North America, manages millions of containers every year. The incident with the One Henry Hudson has caused a temporary halt to port operations and may have wider repercussions for shipping logistics in the area. Investigators and fire officials are collecting evidence to uncover how the fire ignited and if preventive measures could have been implemented.

The LAFD is currently collaborating with port authorities and the shipping company to ensure effective firefighting efforts while reducing the environmental risks posed by the cargo. Local residents are advised to steer clear of the area until the situation is fully resolved.

No statement has yet been released by One Ocean Express regarding the incident, and officials anticipate providing updates as more facts become available.
