Telangana is facing severe flooding after Cyclone Montha, which moved ashore on the Andhra Pradesh coast and weakened into a deep depression over north Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Telangana, brought prolonged heavy rains and widespread disruption.
Persistent downpours since early Wednesday have flooded low-lying zones, damaged standing crops and severed road links at multiple points. Railway tracks at Warangal and Dornakal were underwater, leading to the cancellation and diversion of several services. Districts hit include Warangal, Hanamkonda, Mulugu, Mahabubabad, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Nalgonda, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Sircilla, and Nagarkurnool.
Bheemdevarapalle in Hanamkonda recorded an extreme 41.9 cm of rain in just over 13 hours. Other heavy rainfall sites were Kallada (36.7 cm), Urus (34.3 cm) and Redlawada (33.9 cm) in Warangal district, and Dharmasagar (33.28 cm) in Hanamkonda. The Telangana Development Planning Society reported 35 locations with rainfall above 20.5 cm and 68 locations exceeding 11.5 cm.
The India Meteorological Department issued red warnings for Jangaon, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Mahabubabad, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Karimnagar and Sircilla, while orange alerts were in place for Adilabad, Nirmal, Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagtiyal, Peddapalli and Bhupalapally.
Transport and daily life were heavily affected: Warangal Railway Station recorded stoppages, with trains such as the Vijayawada Intercity Express and East Coast Express halted, and Dornakal in Mahabubabad seeing comparable disruptions. Roads in Hanamkonda town were submerged, leaving the local bus station inundated.
In Khammam district a DCM vehicle was swept away near the Nimmavagu stream, and in Vikarabad a man was rescued after being caught in the Kagna river. Nalgonda saw a major rescue operation when 500 students at a government residential school in Kommapalli village became stranded as nearby stream levels rose.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has ordered a state-wide high alert, directing district officials to evacuate residents from vulnerable low-lying areas and move them to relief camps. The State Irrigation Department is tracking reservoir and river levels and sandbags have been deployed at filling water bodies. SDRF and NDRF teams are carrying out rescue and relief work across affected districts.
Authorities are advising people to avoid flooded zones, follow official instructions and cooperate with rescue teams as heavy rain and rising waters continue to challenge relief operations in Telangana.
