Deadly 5.7 Magnitude Earthquake in Bangladesh Claims 6 Lives

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On Friday morning, a devastating 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Bangladesh, resulting in panic throughout Dhaka and its neighboring regions, and tragically claiming the lives of six individuals. The quake hit at 10:38 AM local time with its epicenter situated approximately 14 kilometers from Narsingdi, close to the capital city.

Reports from residents in Dhaka and nearby areas indicated mild to moderate shaking, with fans, lights, and decorations visibly swaying. Many fled from homes, schools, and workplaces in search of safety. Social media platforms were abuzz with videos capturing the quake's impact and people’s immediate responses.

The earthquake was categorized as shallow, which intensified the surface shaking. Experts noted that Bangladesh is located in a seismically volatile region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, making it susceptible to such tremors that can also impact adjacent countries like India, Myanmar, and Nepal.

Sadly, the earthquake resulted in the deaths of six individuals, primarily due to collapsing structures and debris in areas like Narsingdi. Numerous injuries were reported, with emergency medical teams dispatched for immediate support.

While the tremors were alarming, authorities confirmed that search and rescue operations are currently underway. Teams across Dhaka, Narsingdi, and neighboring districts are examining buildings, bridges, and other public infrastructures for safety. Residents are advised to stay calm, adhere to safety protocols, and refrain from circulating unverified claims about the quake.

The impact of the earthquake also reached eastern India, affecting regions like West Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, with residents allí reporting light tremors. Users in Kolkata, Cooch Behar, and Dinajpur shared their experiences detailing swaying walls and fans, showcasing the quake's extensive reach.

Authorities have stressed the importance of preparedness in earthquake-prone areas, urging the public to stay away from tall structures and refrain from using elevators after experiencing tremors. Officials have also cautioned about potential aftershocks and encouraged residents to remain vigilant for official updates.

This event has reignited conversations surrounding the necessity for improved earthquake preparedness and construction safety regulations in Bangladesh and its neighboring regions. While this earthquake resulted in fatalities, experts assert that proactive measures can significantly reduce casualties in future occurrences.
