The state of Florida has announced plans to seek the death penalty for a man charged with the murder of two Bangladeshi doctoral students from the University of South Florida. The Hillsborough State Attorney's Office has officially filed for capital punishment against 26-year-old Hisham Saleh Abugharbieh, who was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder alongside additional charges. This heinous crime has sent shockwaves through both local and international communities.
The deceased, Zamil Limon and Nahida Bristy, both 27, were pursuing their doctoral degrees at the USF campus in Tampa. They were reported missing under suspicious circumstances on April 16. Authorities indicated that Limon was last seen at the off-campus apartment he shared with Abugharbieh, while Bristy's last known location was a science building on campus. Their mysterious disappearance led to a comprehensive search efforts by local law enforcement.
Following a week-long search, law enforcement apprehended Abugharbieh. He has remained in custody as investigators compile their case. Detectives have utilized cellphone tracking and license plate technology to trace his movements and locate Limon’s phone. This digital evidence ultimately pointed to a bridge area where Limon's remains were found on April 24.
Prosecutors reported that Limon's body bore multiple stab wounds, indicating he may have been restrained prior to his death. On April 26, a kayaker discovered Bristy’s body in nearby waters. This alarming turn of events heightened investigators' concerns regarding the crime's escalating violence. Further forensic analysis from the apartment shared by the trio has established strong links between the suspect and the murders.
Throughout the inquiry, detectives interviewed both Abugharbieh and another housemate shortly after the students vanished. During the questioning, a bandage was visible on Abugharbieh's pinky finger; he maintained his innocence regarding Limon’s fate. The suspect's mother also revealed that he had previously exhibited anger management issues and violent behavior towards family members.
The investigation revealed unsettling evidence from their living quarters. A roommate informed authorities that Abugharbieh had used a cart on the night of April 16 to transport several boxes to a trash compactor. Items belonging to Limon, such as his wallet, student ID, eyeglasses, and clothing with apparent blood stains, were recovered from the disposal area.
Upon returning to the apartment with a search warrant, investigators found traces of blood leading from the kitchen to the suspect’s bedroom, as well as blood-soaked carpeting in the room. Notably, in Limon's bedroom, detectives uncovered Bristy’s university ID and credit cards. Prosecutors believe that the gathered evidence will significantly influence the ongoing legal proceedings in Florida.
