Deepika Faces Criticism Over Abu Dhabi Tourism Ad Outfit

Deepika Faces Criticism Over Abu Dhabi Tourism Ad Outfit

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Bollywood star Deepika Padukone has become the center of an online controversy after appearing in a new Abu Dhabi tourism advertisement. The ad, created by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, features Deepika and her husband, actor Ranveer Singh, as brand ambassadors. In the video, Deepika covers her head while visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which led some online users to accuse her of wearing a “hijab.”

Cultural Representation in the Ad

The advertisement showcases the couple enjoying several iconic Abu Dhabi attractions. They are seen admiring artworks at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, walking through the grand architectural spaces, and smiling together while touring the city. The controversy began after a segment showing Deepika wearing a red outfit that covered her body except for her face and hands. Ranveer appears beside her in a formal black suit, completing the elegant and respectful tone of the campaign.

Social Media Reactions and Misunderstanding

After the ad’s release, Deepika began trending online, with critics accusing her of wearing a “hijab.” However, many observers pointed out that what she wore was not a hijab but an abaya—a long, modest gown traditionally worn by women visiting religious places in the UAE. According to mosque guidelines, all female visitors must wear long, loose-fitting clothing and cover their heads as a sign of respect.

Public Division Over Deepika’s Choice

Some social media users referred to Deepika’s earlier Vogue video “My Choice” from 2015, which emphasized women’s freedom to make their own decisions regarding clothing and lifestyle. They accused her of contradicting her earlier message. However, many of her fans defended her, explaining that Deepika’s attire was a gesture of cultural sensitivity, not a statement against her previous beliefs. Supporters praised her for adhering to local customs while promoting tourism in a culturally diverse region.

Deepika’s Respect for Religious Traditions

Fans also recalled that Deepika and Ranveer have shown consistent respect for religious and cultural norms in the past. The couple has visited several temples across India, including the Lord Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala and the Golden Temple in Amritsar, to celebrate special occasions. During these visits, Deepika dressed traditionally and covered her head, showing her reverence for the sacred places.

Personal Life and Continued Respect for Customs

Before the birth of their daughter Dua in September last year, Deepika and Ranveer visited the Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai. The visit reflected their continued respect for diverse religious traditions. Fans pointed to such gestures as proof that Deepika’s wardrobe choices often align with cultural and spiritual settings, rather than publicity motives.

Not the First Time Facing Criticism

This is not the first time Deepika has faced online trolling for her fashion choices. Two years ago, her appearance in the “Besharam Rang” song from the film Pathaan attracted widespread criticism due to her outfit. Despite the backlash, Deepika’s supporters consistently defend her right to choose her clothing while maintaining respect for local traditions wherever she goes.

No Official Response Yet

As of now, Deepika Padukone has not issued any official statement in response to the recent trolling over her Abu Dhabi tourism appearance. Neither the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi nor Ranveer Singh has commented on the matter. The campaign, however, continues to gain attention for showcasing the cultural beauty of Abu Dhabi and promoting the city as a global tourist destination.

A Broader Perspective on Cultural Sensitivity

The debate highlights the ongoing challenge faced by public figures who represent global brands—balancing personal expression with cultural awareness. Deepika’s participation in the ad demonstrates her professionalism and respect for international traditions. While social media criticism remains vocal, many believe her attire reflects the values of inclusivity and respect that international tourism campaigns often celebrate.
