Major Progress at Deira Drainage Project with 36% Completion Marked

Dubai Municipality has announced notable advancements in the Deira drainage enhancement project, now 36% completed. This AED 500 million effort is integral to bolstering the city’s stormwater drainage and flood response systems.

Project Highlights

  • Investment: AED 500 million

  • Area served: 13 key districts across 4,700 hectares

  • Expansion: 60 km of stormwater pipelines

  • Current status: 36% progress (Phase 1)

This initiative aims to enhance the management of stormwater and mitigate water pooling during significant rain events across vital urban sectors.

Affected Areas

The project encompasses various significant locations, including:
Al Qusais (1 & 2), Oud Al Muteena, Mizhar 3, Al Twar (1 & 3), Muhaisnah 4, Al Nahda 2, Al Qusais Industrial Area 1, Al Garhoud, Casablanca Street, Dubai Airport vicinity, and Al Rashidiya.

Engineering Advancements

  • 22 km of drainage pipelines installed during Phase 1

  • Piping diameter: up to 2.5 meters for maximum flow

  • New pumping station construction near Dubai Creek

  • Pumping efficiency: up to 8,000 liters/sec

Cutting-edge engineering techniques are utilized to guarantee efficient execution while minimizing disruptions for residents and businesses.

Part of the Tasreef Initiative

This project is a vital element of Dubai’s Tasreef Initiative, which aims to modernize the stormwater network with a total investment of AED 30 billion.

Goals for the program include:

  • Boosting infrastructure capacity by as much as 700%

  • Slashing construction and maintenance costs by 20%

  • Prolonging the lifespan of drainage systems

  • Augmenting overall climate adaptability

Government Insights

Leaders at Dubai Municipality have remarked that the project embodies a forward-looking vision to create a sustainable and resilient urban landscape. There is a strong emphasis on enhancing infrastructure efficiency, facilitating urban development, and safeguarding residents during adverse weather conditions.

Officials from the Waste and Sewerage Agency noted the implementation of modern engineering solutions to boost drainage performance, decrease flood risks, and ensure business continuity in key commercial districts.
