Dubai Municipality has announced notable advancements in the Deira drainage enhancement project, now 36% completed. This AED 500 million effort is integral to bolstering the city’s stormwater drainage and flood response systems.
Project Highlights
Investment: AED 500 million
Area served: 13 key districts across 4,700 hectares
Expansion: 60 km of stormwater pipelines
Current status: 36% progress (Phase 1)
This initiative aims to enhance the management of stormwater and mitigate water pooling during significant rain events across vital urban sectors.
Affected Areas
The project encompasses various significant locations, including:
Al Qusais (1 & 2), Oud Al Muteena, Mizhar 3, Al Twar (1 & 3), Muhaisnah 4, Al Nahda 2, Al Qusais Industrial Area 1, Al Garhoud, Casablanca Street, Dubai Airport vicinity, and Al Rashidiya.
Engineering Advancements
22 km of drainage pipelines installed during Phase 1
Piping diameter: up to 2.5 meters for maximum flow
New pumping station construction near Dubai Creek
Pumping efficiency: up to 8,000 liters/sec
Cutting-edge engineering techniques are utilized to guarantee efficient execution while minimizing disruptions for residents and businesses.
Part of the Tasreef Initiative
This project is a vital element of Dubai’s Tasreef Initiative, which aims to modernize the stormwater network with a total investment of AED 30 billion.
Goals for the program include:
Boosting infrastructure capacity by as much as 700%
Slashing construction and maintenance costs by 20%
Prolonging the lifespan of drainage systems
Augmenting overall climate adaptability
