Heightened Security as Delhi Launches Anti-Terror Probe Following Car Blast

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Delhi, India – The investigation into a tragic car explosion near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort is ramping up as authorities apply the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in their efforts. The devastating blast on Monday evening has claimed at least eight lives, leaving 20 others injured, marking the most significant incident of this nature to hit the capital in more than a decade.

The vehicle was reported to have halted at a traffic signal in the bustling Old Delhi area before it exploded at approximately 6:52 pm, resulting in severe damage to surrounding cars and buildings. Witness accounts describe a scene filled with wreckage and frantic individuals as rescue teams moved in.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Raja Banthia indicated that a case has been formally opened under the UAPA, alongside charges related to the Explosives Act. “The investigation is still in its early phases; further comments would be premature,” Banthia stated to journalists. Forensic teams have cordoned off the blast site, meticulously collecting evidence to establish the incident's cause and details.

Investigators are also focused on determining the ownership and occupants of the car, presumed to be among the fatalities. Family members have gathered at Lok Nayak Hospital to identify the deceased, all while enhanced security measures are activated throughout Delhi and at vital installations nationwide.

Federal Home Minister Amit Shah reassured citizens that authorities are investigating “all angles” with security agencies working collaboratively to expedite the inquiry.

The Red Fort, a historic Mughal structure and emblem of India's rich heritage, attracts countless visitors and is the site for the Prime Minister’s annual address on Independence Day. Despite the chaos, Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for a planned trip to Bhutan on Tuesday morning.

As the investigation unfolds, security forces maintain a vigilant stance across the capital, underlining the necessity of caution following this unprecedented attack in Delhi.
