Delhi-NCR Experiences Hazardous AQI Levels Amid Pollution Concerns

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

On Sunday, Delhi-NCR was enveloped in dense smog as the Air Quality Index (AQI) surged to hazardous levels, drastically reducing visibility throughout the metropolis. Residents in neighborhoods such as India Gate, Mahipalpur, and East Delhi expressed alarm over the degraded air quality, leading to urgent demands for action against escalating pollution levels.

Environmental activists and local citizens rallied at India Gate on Sunday, advocating for swift measures to enhance air quality. Several participants faced temporary detainment by authorities for gathering without prior approval but were subsequently released. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the governmental response and called for substantial action regarding pollution rather than penalizing citizens advocating for clean air.

Gandhi stated, “Today, the AQI in Delhi-NCR is alarmingly high. Individuals peacefully advocating for clean air should not be treated as offenders. Immediate intervention is essential.”

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, addressing the forthcoming MCD bypolls, pointed to the inadequacies in development under past administrations, attributing the pollution dilemma to flaws in urban planning and infrastructure. Concurrently, Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal expressed her intention to bring up the deteriorating air quality in Delhi during the upcoming winter parliamentary session, cautioning that winter smog transforms the capital into a “gas chamber” detrimental to lungs, heart, brain, and even unborn children.

Additionally, Delhi faced other incidents that raised public safety alarms, including a heartbreaking electrocution death of a 23-year-old woman in Mahipalpur.

Authorities are closely monitoring the developments. Citizens are urged to minimize outdoor activities, wear masks, and keep abreast of air quality updates as pollution levels remain critically elevated today.

The alarming rise in pollution has ignited widespread discourse across social media and community platforms, with urgent calls for government intervention to avert further health risks.
