DEWA Secures AED 216 Million Contract for Water Network Enhancement

DEWA Secures AED 216 Million Contract for Water Network Enhancement

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has officially awarded a significant contract valued at AED 216 million aimed at enhancing the emirate’s water transmission network. This initiative represents a crucial move towards providing a dependable, efficient, and forward-thinking water supply system able to support Dubai’s rapid urbanization and long-term sustainability objectives.

The undertaking will encompass the procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning of state-of-the-art glass-reinforced epoxy (GRE) pipelines. These pipelines, available in various sizes to accommodate diverse needs, are celebrated for their robust corrosion resistance, longevity, and capacity to endure high pressure—qualities that make them ideal for contemporary water infrastructure projects throughout Dubai.

Project Goals: Enhancing Reliability and Efficiency

According to DEWA’s Managing Director and CEO, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the utility is dedicated to improving water production and operational efficacy. He stressed the importance of optimizing water transmission to keep pace with Dubai’s ongoing growth, catering to increasing population demands, and ensuring consistent supply for households, commercial entities, and industrial applications.

Al Tayer further mentioned that this project aligns with Dubai’s sustainable development agenda. The city aspires to cultivate more intelligent, resilient infrastructure that provides lasting environmental and economic advantages.

Project Highlights

This initiative features the installation of a 7.1-kilometre primary water transmission line, designed to boost water flow and pressure throughout the network. This improvement will particularly aid developing neighborhoods and key commercial and industrial sectors.

Additionally, the project will create 20 interconnections that will link various elements of the transmission and distribution grid. These connections are essential as they facilitate efficient balance in water pressure and enable quick responses during high-demand scenarios or emergencies.

By optimizing these links, DEWA aims to enhance the system's readiness to manage peak usage, mitigate disruptions, and minimize water shortage risks.

Supporting the Growth and Future Needs of Dubai

As Dubai continues to rapidly expand in sectors such as tourism, real estate, manufacturing, logistics, and green technology, the demand for an efficient water infrastructure escalates. This project is a commitment to meeting both present and future demands through an adaptive network that evolves with development.

The upgraded system will empower major projects, burgeoning residential areas, business districts, hotels, industrial zones, and essential public service infrastructures.

A Completion Timeline of 24 Months

The work is expected to be completed in 24 months, executed across multiple sites in Dubai, ensuring a seamless integration of the new pipelines with existing systems.

This strategy guarantees stable daily operations while the enhancements are underway, minimizing impacts on residents and local businesses.

Why GRE Pipelines Matter

Glass-reinforced epoxy pipelines are increasingly favored for large-scale water projects for several compelling reasons:

  • Corrosion Resistance: GRE pipelines are resilient against rust and deterioration, lowering maintenance needs.

  • Longevity: Their lifespan significantly surpasses that of traditional materials.

  • High Performance: They maintain effective water pressure and flow rates.

  • Lightweight & Efficient: Their ease of transport and installation reduces overall time and costs.

These advantages were fundamental in DEWA’s decision-making as they seek to construct infrastructure that is durable yet economical over time.

Alignment with Dubai’s Sustainability Goals

The UAE and Dubai have articulated clear commitments towards sustainable development, renewable energy utilization, and resource efficiency. Upgrading water networks is integral to this overarching vision.

This initiative supports:

  • long-term water security,

  • efficient resource allocation,

  • environmental preservation,

  • decreased operational expenses, and

  • intelligent infrastructure initiatives.

It also complements DEWA’s other advancements, including:

  • innovative digital monitoring tools,

  • smart metering systems,

  • enhanced water conservation strategies,

  • and increased investments in water desalination and storage solutions.

Ensuring Future Preparedness for Water Demand

A primary goal of this initiative is to ready Dubai for escalating water demands. With a growing population and continuous development, the pressure on water resources intensifies.

An improved transmission framework helps preempt:

  • service interruptions,

  • pressure fluctuations,

  • sudden shortages,

  • and delays in expansion areas.

Thus, residents, companies, and essential services can expect a consistent and dependable water supply, even amid urban growth.

Advantages for Residents and Industries

The enhanced water transmission network is projected to:

  • deliver consistent and robust water flow in residences and facilities,

  • aid industrial and commercial sectors reliant on uninterrupted water supply,

  • fortify emergency responses,

  • and decrease future maintenance expenses.

It is also set to bolster construction, hospitality, and technology sectors, all of which require robust infrastructure to function optimally.

DEWA's AED 216 million contract signifies a pivotal investment in Dubai's water future. By developing a more resilient, effective, and dependable transmission network, DEWA is facilitating a secure water supply for both present and foreseeable needs of the emirate.

This project, showcasing advanced GRE pipelines, a new 7.1-kilometre main line, and 20 interconnections, signifies a key move towards scaffolding Dubai’s growth while adhering to principles of sustainability and resilience. Scheduled for completion in two years, it will be instrumental in shaping Dubai's infrastructural landscape and contributing to its long-term developmental aspirations.
