The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), in partnership with the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority (DECCA), has successfully planted 600 mangrove trees at the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary, furthering Dubai's pledge to environmental sustainability and climate action.
This recent plantation event involved 239 volunteers, who generously contributed 478 hours of their time. DEWA employees, their families, and students from DEWA Academy were among those who showcased a strong community commitment to conservation efforts.
This initiative is part of a larger programme where DEWA aims to restore and safeguard mangrove ecosystems along Dubai's coastline. From February 2023 to December 2025, DEWA intends to plant a total of 13,950 mangrove trees at the sanctuary, with the engagement of nearly 1,900 volunteers. These actions reflect the authority's emphasis on nature-based solutions to tackle climate challenges and preserve marine biodiversity.
Mangroves are crucial for protecting coastal zones against erosion, supporting marine ecosystems, and absorbing carbon dioxide. By expanding mangrove habitats, DEWA intends to enhance ecological resilience while contributing significantly to the nation's environmental objectives.
This endeavour is part of the 'Plant the Emirates’ National Programme, which aims to foster afforestation and sustainable agriculture across the UAE. It aligns with the country's ambitious goal to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030, a fundamental aspect of the UAE’s climate and biodiversity strategy.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, reaffirmed the authority’s dedication to boosting biodiversity through green space expansion across the nation. He underscored the necessity of integrating agriculture and afforestation into daily life for lasting environmental sustainability.
Al Tayer remarked that mangroves rank among the UAE’s most precious natural resources, particularly in terms of coastal defense and supporting marine life. He stated that DEWA is committed to collaborating with strategic partners to restore mangrove forests, guarantee their sustainability, and protect local ecosystems through evidence-based methods.
Participants in the event lauded DEWA for fostering volunteerism and awareness regarding environmental issues. Many participants expressed that such efforts provide a valuable chance for individuals to directly contribute to the conservation of both terrestrial and marine environments.
Through ongoing collaboration, community involvement, and large-scale afforestation initiatives, DEWA is taking a pivotal role in advancing Dubai’s environmental agenda and reinforcing the UAE’s position as a leader in sustainable development and climate action.
