The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) celebrated a pivotal achievement in its clean energy initiatives by adding 1,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity in 2025. This notable milestone is part of Phase Six of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which aims for a total capacity of 1,800MW, showcasing Dubai's dedication to advancing renewable energy alignment with top international standards.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, emphasized that this achievement embodies DEWA’s commitment to realizing the vision set forth by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The initiative aims to accelerate the shift to renewable energy, reinforcing Dubai's stature as a global sustainability and energy innovation leader.
Al Tayer noted that the project adheres to a structured long-term strategy focused on phased development. This approach enhances the reliability of Dubai’s energy framework, ensuring it meets the increasing demands driven by economic growth, urban expansion, and population increases. Additionally, this milestone is integral to the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which sets a goal of achieving 100% clean energy production by mid-century.
DEWA highlighted that this advancement underscores Dubai’s role as a global leader in transitioning to a green economy founded on sustainability, innovation, and advanced technology. It also reflects DEWA's rapid expansion of renewable energy initiatives, boosting the proportion of clean energy within the overall energy framework and establishing an efficient, sustainable power generation system for the future.
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, inaugurated in 2012 by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is a key strategic project driving the UAE’s long-term clean energy goals. With the addition of this capacity, the solar park now boasts a total energy production capacity of 3,860MW.
By 2030, the total capacity is projected to surpass 8,000MW, significantly exceeding the initial target of 5,000MW. This substantial growth signifies Dubai’s accelerated transition to clean energy. Upon full development, the initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 8.5 million tonnes annually, fortifying Dubai’s position as a global center for the green economy powered by knowledge and innovation.
DEWA’s expansion of clean energy capabilities is set to persist. In 2025, the authority called for bids for the seventh phase of the solar park, indicating that further capacity increases are already in progress. Meanwhile, the final 800MW of the sixth phase is slated for completion and grid connection by the end of 2026.
With consistent advancement and significant investments in renewable resources, Dubai is edging closer to its ultimate ambition of becoming a leading global city in clean, sustainable, and future-ready energy production.
