DEWA, Italy Boost Clean Energy and Climate Tech Partnership

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), welcomed an Italian parliamentary delegation led by Jacopo Morrone, President of the Italian Parliamentary Bicameral Ecomafia Commission on Climate and Environment, to explore new avenues of cooperation in renewable energy and advanced climate technologies.

During the meeting, Al Tayer highlighted the strong and long-standing relationship between the United Arab Emirates and Italy, describing it as a foundation for deeper collaboration in sustainability and innovation. He reaffirmed DEWA’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with Italian institutions and global stakeholders, with a focus on knowledge exchange, technological advancement and the adoption of international best practices in clean energy and the circular economy.

Discussions centred on global strategies to accelerate the transition toward renewable energy and the policy frameworks required to achieve sustainable development goals. Both sides reviewed opportunities to enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest, particularly sustainability, innovation and advanced clean-energy technologies aligned with the environmental objectives of both nations.

Al Tayer outlined DEWA’s flagship initiatives that support Dubai’s long-term sustainability vision and the transition to a green economy. These efforts are closely aligned with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aim to generate 100 per cent of Dubai’s energy production capacity from clean sources by mid-century. He also detailed DEWA’s increasing reliance on Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, including artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure investments that enhance efficiency across its services and operations.

A major focus of the briefing was the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, one of the world’s largest renewable energy projects. The solar park currently has a production capacity of 3,860 megawatts, contributing 21.5 per cent of Dubai’s total energy mix. By 2030, its capacity is projected to exceed 8,000 megawatts—well above the original 5,000-megawatt target—raising the share of clean energy to 36.1 per cent. This expansion is expected to reduce annual carbon emissions by more than 8.5 million tonnes. The delegation was also introduced to the park’s advanced technologies, including photovoltaic and concentrated solar power systems, and its critical role in reducing environmental impact.

Al Tayer further emphasised DEWA’s global standing, noting that the authority consistently benchmarks its performance against international standards. DEWA ranks first worldwide in 13 key performance indicators, including the lowest electricity customer minutes lost, minimal transmission and distribution losses, and exceptionally high customer satisfaction levels.

The delegation was also briefed on DEWA’s upcoming headquarters, Al Shera’a, set to become the tallest, largest and smartest net-positive government building in the world. Designed to achieve LEED Platinum and WELL Gold certifications, the building will integrate advanced digital solutions such as the Internet of Things, big data and intelligent automation. Additional projects highlighted included the 250-megawatt hydroelectric power plant in Hatta—the first of its kind in the GCC—and the region’s pioneering Green Hydrogen project.

The meeting was attended by several senior DEWA officials, underscoring the importance both sides place on building long-term cooperation in clean energy, environmental protection and technological innovation.
