dnata Launches Centralized Cargo Screening Hub at Dubai Airport

Post by : Bianca Haleem

dnata, a leading global air and travel service provider, is revolutionizing its cargo operations at Dubai International Airport (DXB) with the introduction of a new centralized cargo screening room. Developed in collaboration with Dubai Police, this innovative hub aims to expedite air cargo inspections while enhancing safety and efficiency.

This advanced control room integrates cutting-edge automation and real-time surveillance, embodying Dubai's commitment to modernizing trade and logistics operations.

Unified Command Center for Seamless Screening

The new setup enables Dubai Police personnel to remotely manage six X-ray machines from a single, centralized location. Previously, cargo screening was decentralized, necessitating more time, manpower, and physical relocations of goods.

Now, all activities unfold under one roof. Each X-ray machine is connected to dnata's digital cargo management system, One Cargo, which streamlines data sharing, enhances team communication, and accelerates decision-making. This leads to reduced delays and accelerated processing of screened cargo.

Guillaume Crozier, dnata’s Chief Cargo Officer, highlighted that this initiative represents a significant milestone in enhancing operational efficiencies. He noted that centralizing screening operations underscores dnata's commitment to smarter operational methodologies while reflecting the collaborative spirit with Dubai Police to bolster safety and effectiveness.

Enhanced Processing and Productivity Gains

With the centralization of screening tasks, dnata anticipates a cargo throughput increase of approximately three percent annually. While this growth may seem marginal, in the context of high cargo volumes, even slight improvements can lead to substantial benefits, minimizing waiting periods, shortening workflows, and reducing the need for additional resources.

Currently, dnata caters to over 120 airlines at DXB, handling around 60,000 tonnes of cargo monthly at this airport alone. In the preceding year, dnata processed over a million tonnes of cargo between April 2024 and March 2025, marking unprecedented throughput at both DXB and Dubai World Central (DWC), with a year-on-year growth of approximately 30 percent.

These impressive figures underscore dnata’s commitment to harnessing automation; as demand for cargo services escalates, advanced systems are essential to managing increased volumes efficiently.

Dubai's Expanding Logistics Landscape

Cargo traffic in Dubai is escalating, driven by several key factors:

  • growing e-commerce industry

  • expansion of regional consumer markets

  • Dubai's role as a pivotal global transit hub

The emirate stands as a crucial connection point between Asia, Europe, and Africa. As more businesses opt to transport goods via Dubai, the airport needs cutting-edge logistics capabilities to maintain competitiveness.

This new screening facility exemplifies such advancements, enhancing workflow efficiency while supporting Dubai's overarching digital evolution strategy.

Strengthening Security and Resource Optimization

The newly developed system significantly lessens manual interactions at various screening stages, thereby minimizing human error and enhancing monitoring capabilities. Real-time imaging, digital reporting tools, and automated tracking provide thorough and traceable processes for all shipments.

Centralization also promotes:

  • minimized unnecessary cargo transit

  • decreased fuel usage within the facility

  • improved decision-making accuracy

  • optimized space management

With fewer manual touchpoints, dnata can maximize the use of labor and equipment while leveraging advanced data analytics to effectively manage cargo flows.

A Successful Partnership between dnata and Dubai Police

The establishment of the control room is a product of collaboration between public and private entities, the technology facilitating primary operations such as real-time monitoring and secondary activities like detailed reporting and documentation.

This initiative embodies Dubai’s partnership-focused development approach, where shared objectives and information exchanges amongst authorities and industry stakeholders uphold Dubai's trade performance and global connections.

Beyond Screening Innovations

The control room is merely one facet of dnata's commitment to modernizing cargo operations. The company is exploring and integrating new technologies across its Dubai facilities, including:

Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs)

These robots facilitate safe and efficient shipment movement within warehouses, reducing forklift reliance and optimizing space utilization.

Smart Dimensioning and Load-Optimization Tools

Utilizing sensors and algorithms, these tools capture precise weight and size data for every shipment, enabling teams to fill Unit Load Devices (ULDs) effectively, cutting costs and avoiding wasted space.

Data-Driven Planning

Armed with accurate cargo information, dnata can enhance its route planning, space allocation, and personnel deployments.

dnata's leadership emphasizes that effective technology is driven by skilled personnel. They credit their workforce for successfully integrating digital tools and refining operational performance.

Envisioning the Future of Cargo Operations

The introduction of the centralized control room signifies the industry's transition towards automation and smarter methodologies. dnata's emphasis on remote monitoring, data analytics, and robotics heralds a future where cargo operations will be:

  • more efficient

  • greener

  • safer

  • more cost-effective

Dubai's aviation and logistics sectors have long aspired to global leadership. Through initiatives like this screening hub, dnata is propelling the city towards strengthening that ambition.
