Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, participated in the Annual Meetings of the Global Future Councils and Cybersecurity 2025 held from 14th–16th October. He joined a panel discussion titled ‘Taming Trade’ to discuss challenges arising from global trade tensions among major countries. The session highlighted how tariffs and unpredictable trade policies are reshaping international commerce and prompting countries to seek new trade alliances.
Global Trade in a Changing Landscape
Dr. Al Zeyoudi explained that while tariffs were initially expected to affect specific countries, the widespread reactions and varying acceptance levels have intensified global trade complexities. “Tariff reductions are unlikely in the near future,” he cautioned, calling this the new reality. He compared the flow of trade to water, stating that it will adapt and find pathways wherever needed, emphasizing the importance for nations to maintain traditional ties while also building regional partnerships for economic stability.
AI and Cybersecurity in Trade
The Minister highlighted that data, supply chains, and cybersecurity are closely connected, and that artificial intelligence (AI) will play a pivotal role in enhancing efficiency and driving the next wave of trade technology. The discussion emphasized how businesses can adopt advanced technologies to mitigate risks, optimize operations, and support more resilient trade networks in the face of geopolitical uncertainties.
Insights from Global Experts
Other panelists included Sarah Thorn, Vice President of Global Government Affairs at Walmart, who discussed Walmart’s marketplace growth, empowering small businesses, and ensuring diverse sourcing options. Academics and industry leaders like Josephine Wolff, Simon Evenett, and Lauren Chung also shared perspectives on geopolitical risks, supply chain resilience, and strategies for companies to navigate uncertainty while promoting innovation.
Strengthening Supply Chains and Regional Collaboration
The discussion explored strategies CEOs are using to handle geopolitical uncertainty. Companies are increasingly adopting “local for local” production models, flexible manufacturing, and new trade and R&D partnerships beyond traditional multilateral frameworks. Special focus was given to collaboration across Asia, China, and the UAE and integrating geopolitical risks into corporate risk management practices to maintain supply chain reliability and product availability.
Promoting Sustainable Growth and Innovation
The forum emphasized the role of technology, AI, and cybersecurity in shaping future trade landscapes. By leveraging advanced digital tools, companies can enhance operational efficiency, mitigate risks, and build resilient, adaptable supply chains that support economic growth and sustainable development globally.
UAE’s Role in Hosting Global Dialogue
Organized by the UAE Government in collaboration with the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Annual Meetings of the Global Future Councils and Cybersecurity 2025 brought together over 700 global experts from 93 countries across 37 councils. The event aimed to advance sustainable growth, enhance community well-being, and shape opportunities for future generations, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a hub for global dialogue on trade, technology, and innovation.
Through this participation, the UAE highlighted its commitment to driving innovation in global trade, technology, and cybersecurity. By fostering collaboration between governments, businesses, and experts, the nation supports the development of resilient supply chains, AI-driven trade solutions, and secure digital infrastructures for a rapidly changing global economy.
