The Dubai International Marine Club has officially established the Supreme Organising Committee for the 35th Al Gaffal Dhow Race, a celebrated event for 60-feet traditional dhows, revered as one of the UAE's hallmark maritime competitions.
This race will be conducted under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai. The establishment of the committee was ratified during the club's recent Board of Directors meeting dedicated to 2026.
Leadership of the Organising Committee
Dr. Ahmed Saeed bin Meshar has been designated as the Chair of the newly formed Supreme Committee, with Saif Juma Al Suwaidi appointed as Vice-Chairman. Other committee members include Khalid Khamis bin Dismal, Khalid Ali Al Balooshi, and Mohammed Abdullah Harib (CEO, Dubai International Marine Club), while Mohammed Fadhel Al Sadi will fulfill the role of Committee Rapporteur.
Commitment to Maritime Heritage
Dr. Ahmed Bin Meshar expressed appreciation for the unwavering support of Dubai’s leadership in fostering marine sports and conserving national heritage. He emphasized that the Al Gaffal Race, initiated in 1991, symbolizes the UAE’s profound relationship with the sea and its maritime traditions.
Recognized as a major cultural and sporting event in the Gulf region, the race commemorates the historical journeys of pearl divers as they return to shore after extensive voyages.
Race history and significance
The Al Gaffal Race has evolved into a significant cultural and sporting celebration since its inception, welcoming over 3,000 participants each year. Covering more than 50 nautical miles, the race showcases endurance, collaboration, and time-honored sailing techniques.
In last year’s 34th edition, held on May 2, more than 110 dhows took part, with Zilzal 25 emerging as the winner near Burj Al Arab.
Safety and Scheduling Updates
Given the current regional conditions, the organizing committee is attentively monitoring the situation to guarantee the safety of participants and officials. The race is preliminarily scheduled to take place between 16 and 31 May, pending continuous assessment.
Authorities are putting in place contingency plans and ensuring comprehensive logistical readiness in collaboration with relevant government entities to uphold the highest standards of safety.
