Dubai Police have ramped up enforcement measures targeting young individuals using electric bikes irresponsibly on pedestrian and cycling paths, following numerous reports of e-bikes exceeding speeds of 100 kmph.
Within a focused week of operations in locations like Nad Al Sheba, police impounded a total of 101 electric bikes and handed out 130 fines to mostly teenage offenders. Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, the Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, noted that some e-bikes had been illegally modified to increase their speed, posing significant threats to pedestrians and other road users, as well as to the riders themselves.
“E-bikes are intended for recreation and should not be utilized on sports tracks,” he stated, stressing the dangers presented by unsafe riding behavior.
Legal repercussions have been taken against these riders, with parents of underage violators called in to discuss the risks associated with unsupervised youth. Dubai Police have urged families to reinforce the importance of safety gear, obeying traffic rules, and using only appropriate paths.
As specified by UAE traffic regulations, electric scooters and bicycles are limited to a maximum speed of 20 kmph and must only be used on designated routes with approvals from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Fines include AED 300 for riding on roads with speed limits exceeding 60 kmph, AED 200 for operating without an RTA permit, and AED 200 for non-compliant parking or traffic obstruction.
This operation forms part of ongoing efforts by Dubai Police to ensure public safety and mitigate risks associated with irresponsible e-bike usage. Authorities continue to remind riders and the public that abiding by traffic regulations and practicing safe riding is crucial for all.
