The growing rabbit rescue community in the UAE is making a remarkable difference in the lives of abandoned and neglected bunnies. Across Dubai and other emirates, dedicated volunteers are opening their homes to rabbits that have been left behind, helping them recover, rebuild trust and eventually find permanent families.
Among those leading the effort is Dubai resident Katayune Ehsani, who has been fostering rabbits since 2021. Her current foster rabbit, Frankie, was rescued from a farm in Ras Al Khaimah and brought into a home environment where she can receive proper care and socialization before finding a forever home. Ehsani says her journey into rabbit rescue began unexpectedly after years of caring for stray cats.
The rescue network has grown as more residents become aware of the challenges faced by abandoned rabbits. Many volunteers say rabbits are among the most misunderstood pets, with people often assuming they are low-maintenance animals. In reality, rabbits require specialized diets, medical care, safe living spaces and constant attention to their wellbeing.
Emma Dobey, another active foster volunteer, says she became involved after noticing a large number of abandoned rabbits across the UAE. According to rescuers, many rabbits are purchased impulsively and later abandoned when owners realize the responsibility involved. The extreme UAE climate makes survival especially difficult for rabbits left outdoors, increasing the urgency of rescue efforts.
Volunteers such as Mike Dawson have also stepped forward to provide temporary homes for rescued animals. Dawson currently fosters multiple rabbits and regularly assists with rescue missions, veterinary visits and adoption efforts. He says social media has become an important tool for identifying abandoned rabbits and connecting them with people willing to help.
Supporting many of these efforts is Helping Hands for Small Paws, a volunteer-driven rescue network that coordinates fostering, rehabilitation and adoption. The organization carefully screens foster families, conducts home checks and provides guidance on rabbit care. Through a dedicated community of volunteers, abandoned rabbits are given a chance to recover in safe and loving environments.
Rescuers say fostering a rabbit requires patience, commitment and compassion. Some rabbits are adopted within weeks, while others spend months or even years waiting for the right family. Despite the challenges, volunteers remain committed to ensuring that every rescued bunny has the opportunity to live a healthy and secure life. Their work continues to inspire a growing community of animal lovers determined to make a difference across the UAE.
