Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai is preparing to host the International Council of Museums (ICOM) 27th General Conference tomorrow. This significant event marks the inaugural gathering of its kind in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) region, reinforcing Dubai's stature as a global hub for culture and creativity.
With the theme “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities,” this week-long conference will attract over 4,500 individuals, including museum directors, policymakers, and scholars from across the globe. Its primary objective is to address how museums can adapt amidst rapid social, technological, and environmental shifts, while promoting inclusivity and innovation.
Featuring more than 400 speakers and 100 dialogue sessions, discussions will revolve around topics like Youth Empowerment, Intangible Heritage, and Emerging Technologies, emphasizing the blend of heritage with the digital landscape. Keynote presentations will spotlight renowned figures, such as ICOM's Medea S. Ekner, Krista Pikkat from UNESCO, and Dr. Peter Magee of Zayed National Museum.
Notable sessions include “AI and Museums: From Vision to Global Action,” examining how artificial intelligence can transform visitor experiences, and “Nature as Partner: The Power of Restoration,” focusing on sustainability and museums' role in championing environmental consciousness.
The conference will also see the Revision of the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums, tackling the issue of illicit cultural property trafficking, alongside the presentation of the inaugural ICOM Award for Sustainable Development Practice in Museums, which recognizes pioneering global efforts for positive advancements.
Enhancing the experience, the Museum Fair will showcase over 100 exhibitors eager to present innovative technologies, creative solutions, and collaborations poised to redefine museology. In addition, training sessions and workshops will provide professionals with practical insights and new methodologies for sustainable, digitally connected museums.
By hosting ICOM 2025, Dubai solidifies its role as a leader in cultural discussions and forward-thinking innovations, bridging the gap between global heritage and future aspirations. This event not only honors the progressive role of museums but also highlights Dubai's dedication to fostering creativity, knowledge sharing, and sustainable cultural advancements on the international stage.
