Dubai is advancing towards intelligent and eco-friendly transport systems as His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum reviews the strategic direction and upcoming projects from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The emphasis is on bolstering the city's road infrastructure, public transport, and deploying forward-thinking mobility technologies.
His Highness toured the RTA’s Enterprise Command and Control Centre (EC³), a pioneering facility unifying all transportation modalities within the region – a first in the Middle East. This center oversees traffic management, emergencies, and public safety, monitoring over 28,000 vehicles and processing 4.4 billion mobility data entries daily. Equipped with more than 10,000 cameras and 34 interconnected tech systems, the center employs AI and machine-learning for swift, effective responses, minimizing human error.
Enhancing Road and Public Transport Systems
RTA’s mission is to establish Dubai as a world leader in efficient mobility. The city’s road network currently extends over 25,000 lane-kilometers, featuring 1,000+ vehicle bridges and tunnels and 177 pedestrian crossings. Public transport caters to over two million daily commuters, with a 100-kilometer metro and tram system, 1,380 buses, 13,900 taxis, and 210 marine transport vessels, all part of a comprehensive array of services.
Among the significant future projects is the Dubai Metro Blue Line, which will extend 30 kilometers with 14 stations. This line is set to connect the existing Red and Green lines, uniting key residential, developmental, and industrial hubs anticipated to house one million residents by 2040. It aims to reduce travel time to Dubai International Airport to a mere 20 minutes.
Pioneering Mobility: Aerial and Autonomous Taxis
In addition, Dubai is exploring innovative transportation methods. The aerial taxi initiative, developed with Joby Aviation and Skyports, successfully completed crewed test flights with electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Margham, confirming operational viability in local conditions. Passenger services are expected to commence by 2026.
At the same time, RTA is testing autonomous taxis in collaboration with global mobility firms. The pilot is currently in motion, with plans for commercial operation set for early 2026, marking a significant milestone in Dubai’s quest for fully automated transportation.
Dubai’s comprehensive transport strategy melds cutting-edge technology with substantial infrastructure investments, ensuring a seamless, safe, and effective travel experience for both residents and visitors.
