Dubai has embarked on an ambitious plan for its media sector, as His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum led a high-level meeting of the Dubai Media Council. The objective is to elevate the media sector's contribution to the GDP from 1.4% to 3% by 2033, aligning with the broader Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
During the meeting, Sheikh Ahmed pointed out the untapped potential within the media industry and its capacity to enhance Dubai's economic and global presence. He emphasized the necessity for collaborative efforts between public and private sector media establishments, supported by robust governance and conducive policies for sustainable advancement.
A significant theme of the discussion was the urgency of digital transformation. Sheikh Ahmed noted the necessity for Dubai's media to adapt swiftly to new technologies, asserting that digital platforms are critical for community engagement and enhancing the emirate's global visibility. He underlined the need for creating innovative digital resources and content that mirror Dubai’s progressive identity.
The Council also examined specific performance metrics for 2033, which encompass enhancing media exports, increasing local content production, attracting foreign investment, and broadening Dubai’s outreach to regional and international audiences. To support these goals, new committees focused on film and gaming have been established to foster creative industries.
Her Excellency Mona Al Marri remarked that transferring regulatory supervision to the Dubai Media Council, pursuant to Law No. 29 of 2024, has improved operational efficiency and brought the sector in line with international benchmarks. She mentioned that the revamped regulatory framework strengthens Dubai’s status as a leading media and creative hub.
Additionally, the meeting underscored initiatives designed to cultivate emerging Emirati talent, including leadership training programs and the newly launched Dubai Film and Games Forum, aimed at supporting the future generation of media professionals.
Sheikh Ahmed approved updates to Dubai Media Incorporated’s digital strategy, which includes expanding the “Awaan” platform, investing in original content, and improving audience engagement through new formats such as podcasts. DMI aspires to create a compelling digital presence centered on youth-driven storytelling and universally relevant Emirati narratives.
The meeting concluded with interactions among young members of the DMI Youth Council, part of ongoing initiatives to empower future leaders. The gathering also featured discussions with participants of media talent programs designed to groom second- and third-tier national leaders for greater accountability in the field.
Dubai's latest strategic roadmap heralds a decade defined by heightened innovation, enhanced global visibility, and an invigorated effort to establish the emirate as a leading media powerhouse.
