Abu Dhabi Discovers Unique Second Spawning Period for Kingfish

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Abu Dhabi’s marine specialists have made a remarkable discovery regarding one of the area’s key fish species. The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has recorded a second spawning season for kingfish, occurring from September through November 2025. Previously, it was believed that this species primarily spawned from April to June each year.

This breakthrough result follows extensive monitoring, with EAD scientists gathering and analyzing samples from various locations in the emirate. The ongoing research initiative has led to a comprehensive mapping of the kingfish life cycle, shedding new light on the timing and conditions essential for reproduction.

Kingfish, a swiftly migrating species found in the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean, traverse vast areas in search of food and optimal spawning sites. The identification of an additional spawning window signifies greater biological resilience than previously thought. EAD's research indicates that two reproduction periods in one year can contribute positively to the species' population growth and long-term stock recovery.

The agency is intensifying its research initiatives to enhance knowledge of kingfish biology. In addition to laboratory-based reproductive research, EAD is performing DNA analyses to monitor genetic variations and the population's structure. In 2023, it launched an innovative satellite tracking program—the first global project of its type for kingfish—enabling researchers to observe real-time movement and migration patterns. Insights from this initiative are unveiling the distance the species travels and how environmental factors affect their behavior.

The identification of a second spawning season represents a critical advancement toward more effective fisheries management in Abu Dhabi. Armed with clearer scientific data on reproductive cycles, authorities can establish targeted regulations to foster sustainability while protecting the region’s marine biodiversity for future generations.
