31 Inmates Killed in Ecuador Prison Riot in Machala

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a harrowing incident in southwest Ecuador, at least 31 inmates lost their lives during a violent prison riot, representing yet another tragic chapter in the nation’s persistent struggle with jail-related violence. The confrontation unfolded on Sunday at a correctional facility located in Machala, a port town south of Guayaquil.

Ecuador’s national prison agency reported that 27 inmates succumbed to asphyxiation and “immediate death by hanging.” Authorities have refrained from disclosing additional details regarding the specific circumstances or the motivations behind this outbreak of violence.

Earlier on the same day, officials confirmed four other fatalities within the same facility due to a separate event. That disturbance reportedly originated during a reorganization process in a newly established maximum-security area and was ultimately quelled by tactical police units.

This latest surge of violence compounds Ecuador’s burgeoning prison crisis, which has resulted in numerous fatalities during recent years. Experts point to intense turf wars among rival gangs as a primary cause of these frequent riots, as they battle for control over both internal and external drug routes.

President Daniel Noboa’s government, which has adopted a stringent approach toward organized crime, continues to grapple with the challenges of an overcrowded and underfunded prison system.

In September, the same Machala prison experienced a similar riot that left 14 inmates dead and another 14 injured. Just days following that incident, 17 additional prisoners lost their lives in a separate violent outbreak in Esmeraldas, located near the Colombian border — further emphasizing the nation’s pervasive security concerns.

Authorities have not yet validated whether gang conflicts triggered Sunday’s riot. Ongoing investigations aim to restore order and avert any further loss of life.
