Eddie Murphy, the legendary actor and comedian with a career spanning almost fifty years, is set to receive the American Film Institute’s prestigious Life Achievement Award. The announcement was made by the AFI board of trustees, confirming the award ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 18.
“Eddie Murphy is an enduring American legend,” stated Kathleen Kennedy, chair of AFI’s board. “His influence on film, television, and stand-up comedy is profound, demonstrating a talent that knows no bounds.”
At 64 years old, Murphy first gained fame as a teenage stand-up comedian and became a household name through his work on Saturday Night Live. He subsequently ruled the box office with iconic films such as Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, and the Shrek series. His accolades include a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Academy Awards for Dreamgirls in 2007, as well as a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
In the Netflix documentary Being Eddie, Murphy offers insights into his views on fame and recognition, saying, “Winning feels good, but I don’t stress over it if I don’t win. I’m still Eddie each morning.”
Murphy received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2023 Golden Globes, where he gave a brief, touching acceptance speech, reflecting, “In my youth, I took many things for granted. Now, I appreciate every chance and moment.”
The AFI Life Achievement Award ceremonies are known for their star-studded attendees. Last year’s event honoring Francis Ford Coppola attracted icons like Steven Spielberg, Robert De Niro, and Harrison Ford. Murphy will become the 51st recipient of this esteemed award, which began in 1973 with John Ford. Recent acclaimed winners include Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, and Julie Andrews.
