During a session at the Dubai Press Club, Lebanon’s Deputy Speaker of Parliament, His Excellency Elias Bou Saab, underscored the nation’s potential for recovery and enduring stability, despite current regional challenges.
The dialogue, themed “Lebanon Between Stability and Regional Dynamics,” brought together media professionals and thought leaders, including Maryam Al Mulla, Director of the Dubai Press Club.
In his remarks, Bou Saab addressed the significant political and economic hurdles facing Lebanon, noting how regional dynamics impact the country’s future. He highlighted Lebanon's ties to larger geopolitical relationships involving Gulf nations, Iran, Russia, and China.
He cautioned that heightened tensions, particularly concerning Iran, could adversely affect Lebanon, thereby intensifying existing political and economic challenges.
Nevertheless, he expressed hopeful sentiments regarding Lebanon’s prospects, suggesting the availability of valuable economic and human resources could facilitate a quicker recovery than anticipated. He acknowledged the essential contribution of the Lebanese diaspora, labeling it a crucial support pillar for the national economy.
Bou Saab advocated for a focus on stability to support the much-needed reforms and to enhance state institutions. He emphasized the significance of executing reforms according to the Taif Agreement, which includes bolstering governance and ensuring that the Lebanese Armed Forces maintain control over arms.
Discussing investment climates, Bou Saab remarked on the enduring potential Lebanon holds for investors, asserting that improved stability could gradually foster economic activity and attract foreign investment in the years to come.
He called on businesses and investors to gear up for forthcoming opportunities, expressing confidence that Lebanon could reclaim its economic standing in the region once regional tensions subside.
Additionally, Bou Saab commended Dubai and the UAE for their successful economic model, attributing their achievements to strategic planning and robust leadership.
He reflected on how the vision of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has turned challenges into opportunities, particularly focusing on growth and development during tough times.
He recalled a pivotal moment when Sheikh Mohammed visited the American University in Dubai following the September 11 attacks, highlighting proactive leadership efforts to enhance student capacity amidst adversity.
Looking ahead, Bou Saab noted that the UAE and Dubai are poised for significant economic opportunities once current regional turmoil settles, emphasizing that nations with sustainable economies will emerge as leaders in future growth.
