Expand North Star 2025 Marks 10 Years of Startup Innovation

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Expand North Star, the world’s biggest gathering for startups and investors, will celebrate its 10th edition from 12 to 15 October 2025 at Dubai Harbour. The event is organized by the Dubai World Trade Centre and hosted by the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy. For ten years, the event has helped Dubai strengthen its role as a global leader in the digital economy, supporting innovators, entrepreneurs, and technology investors. It also directly supports the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), which aims to make Dubai a top global business destination.

A Journey from Local to Global

When Expand North Star began in 2016, it was a small regional initiative. Over the years, it grew rapidly to become an international platform for startups and investors. In the very first edition, only 39 countries were represented. By 2024, more than 100 countries participated. This huge growth shows how the event has become a global hub for innovation and investment in technology.

Rise in Startup Participation

The number of digital startups joining the event has grown remarkably. In 2016, only 350 startups showcased their ideas. By the 2024 edition, the number had increased to 1,800 startups, which means a 414% growth in just eight years. This growth reflects how the event gives global entrepreneurs the chance to display their innovations and secure funding to grow their businesses.

Investor Growth Over the Years

Alongside startups, the number of investors at Expand North Star has also risen sharply. In 2016, there were 150 investors. By 2024, this number reached 1,200, showing a 700% increase. This highlights the strong interest from investors around the world who see Dubai as a promising place to find and support successful new businesses.

More Experts and Speakers

The event is also known for hosting some of the world’s top technology leaders and innovators. In 2016, only 25 speakers participated. By 2024, the number grew to 650 speakers. These experts share valuable insights, discuss technology trends, and guide startups on their journey to global success.

Supporting Dubai’s Vision

According to Saeed Al Gergawi, Vice President of the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy, Expand North Star has been essential in helping Dubai become a global hub for technology, entrepreneurship, and advanced digital industries. He said the event has created a strong platform for startups and investors to explore opportunities and contribute to the future of the global digital economy. He added that the Chamber is committed to keeping Dubai attractive for international tech communities and entrepreneurs.

Unlocking Global Investments

One of the main goals of Expand North Star is to connect startups with investors. It allows new companies to present their ideas, secure early funding, and even attract large-scale investment for expansion. Venture capitalists, fund managers, and angel investors attend to discover the next big idea. This helps startups move from small beginnings to billion-dollar valuations, known as unicorn status.

Why Dubai is Attractive for Startups

The event also highlights Dubai’s strong advantages for entrepreneurs. Dubai offers modern infrastructure, a supportive government, and business-friendly policies. This makes the city one of the most attractive places in the world to launch and scale digital businesses. Many companies use the event to learn about Dubai’s ecosystem and often decide to establish their global headquarters in the emirate.

Learning from Successful Founders

At Expand North Star, participants can listen directly to successful entrepreneurs who turned their small startups into billion-dollar companies. Their experiences and lessons provide valuable knowledge to new entrepreneurs who want to follow a similar journey. These stories are an important part of the event’s appeal, as they show what is possible with the right ideas and support.

Support for Entrepreneurs

Expand North Star is not just about showcasing startups. It also provides guidance, mentorship, and tools to help entrepreneurs succeed. Through partnerships with accelerators and industry experts, startups can receive advice on how to build strong companies. The event gives them a roadmap for growth, both in Dubai and internationally.

Building Global Networks

The event also plays an important role in networking. Startups meet investors, global tech leaders, and potential business partners. They gain insights into international expansion and learn strategies that have worked for some of the most successful digital ventures in the world. The networking opportunities at the event are considered among the best for the global startup community.

Unicorn Companies and Global Talent

In 2024, Expand North Star hosted 65 unicorn companies with a combined market value of over US$ 400 billion. This shows the scale and importance of the event in the global tech scene. The event also ran the YouthX Unipreneur program, which is the UAE’s largest youth initiative for innovation and startups, encouraging young people to join the digital economy.

New Countries Joining the Event

Each year, more countries join Expand North Star. In 2024, new participants came from Austria, Australia, Canada, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Malaysia, and Singapore. New investors also came from Azerbaijan, Mauritius, Denmark, Peru, Malta, and Cyprus. This expanding list of countries shows how Dubai has become a global meeting point for startups and investors.

Strong European and Brazilian Participation

The 2024 edition had the largest participation from European startups, with more than 350 early-stage companies from across Europe. Brazil also made a strong presence with 50 digital startups, many of which used the event to expand globally through Dubai.

Innovation Platforms and Special Features

The success of Expand North Star comes not only from its size but also from its creative platforms. The 2024 edition featured programs like Corporate Arena, Technology Transfer 3.0, The Future of Media and Creativity, NS Scaleups, Sonar+D, and the Startup Genome Ecosystem Leadership Forum. These platforms gave startups and investors access to deep insights into future technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, fintech, climate tech, and Web 3.0.

Funding Competitions for Startups

Expand North Star also creates exciting opportunities for entrepreneurs to win funding. One of the most popular competitions is the Supernova Challenge, where startups compete for funding of up to US$ 200,000. This competition gives entrepreneurs the chance to pitch their ideas, connect with mentors, and gain exposure to investors who can help them grow their businesses.

A Decade of Innovation

As Expand North Star enters its 10th edition in 2025, it stands as a symbol of Dubai’s leadership in digital innovation. Over the past decade, it has grown from a local event into the world’s largest gathering for startups and investors. With its global reach, strong networks, and commitment to supporting innovation, Expand North Star will continue to drive the future of entrepreneurship and technology on an international scale.
