Jakarta, Indonesia – Explosions at a mosque within a school complex in Kelapa Gading, Jakarta, during Friday prayers have resulted in at least 55 individuals being hospitalized, authorities reported. The blasts triggered fear among worshippers, with injuries ranging from minor burns to more severe traumas.
Witnesses recounted panic-stricken scenes as several explosions erupted in rapid succession. Luciana, 43, an employee at the school canteen, vividly described her experience: “The explosion was so loud that it rendered me breathless from shock. Initially, we thought it was a technical malfunction, but the terror forced everyone to flee quickly.”
A 17-year-old male has been identified as the suspected attacker. Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad confirmed the suspect is currently undergoing surgery, though the motives behind the attack have yet to be disclosed.
Jakarta's police chief, Asep Edi Suheri, indicated that a comprehensive investigation is underway. “We have implemented several security measures, including securing the crime scene and establishing police barriers,” he confirmed. Officers have cordoned off the site and dispatched armed police, emergency vehicles, and armored units to ensure public safety.
The mosque itself appeared undamaged on the outside. Security officials confirmed there were two separate explosions. This school complex is situated on navy-owned land in North Jakarta, a region heavily populated by military personnel and retirees.
While Indonesia has seen attacks on churches and Western entities before, incidents involving mosques are comparatively rare. Recent years have seen a notable suppression of Islamist militancy, making this attack particularly concerning.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities aim to uncover the full implications of the incident, the motivations of the attacker, and any potential accomplices involved.
