Ternopil, Ukraine — November 19, 2025: In a tragic escalation of violence, Russian missile and drone strikes on western Ukraine have resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals, including two children, and left 66 injured. This incident marks one of the most devastating attacks on the region since the onset of the full-scale war in February 2022.
Reports from Ukrainian officials reveal that the assaults predominantly targeted two residential buildings in Ternopil, leading to catastrophic destruction and trapping many individuals beneath the debris.
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the launch of over 470 drones and 47 missiles across various western regions, causing widespread devastation. The strikes also impacted areas such as Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk, with Kharkiv facing drone strikes across three of its districts, injuring over 30 people.
The damage in Ternopil was especially catastrophic. Video footage shared by Zelensky captured the enormity of destruction, showing one flats block completely collapsed between the third and ninth floors. Rescue operations were underway, with smoke billowing from the wreckage and sirens echoing throughout the city, representing the gravity of the crisis at hand.
The strikes inflicted damage on essential energy facilities, transport networks, and other civil infrastructure, leading to power outages in several cities. Notably, two of the injured in Ivano-Frankivsk were children, underscoring the indiscriminate nature of these attacks. The head of Lviv's regional authority confirmed damage to a local energy facility, affecting power distribution in the vicinity.
This increase in violence follows Ukraine's report of firing US-supplied long-range ATACMS missiles at targets within Russia, indicating a critical escalation in the ongoing conflict. Russia asserted that four missiles were directed towards Voronezh, but were intercepted by air defenses.
These attacks coincided with President Zelensky's ongoing visit to Ankara, Turkey, where he aims to foster US-led peace negotiations and engage in discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Reports suggest that US special envoy Steve Witkoff is collaborating with Russian counterpart Kirill Dmitriev on a potential peace framework, although the Kremlin has denied its representatives' involvement in the talks.
Increased tensions were noted when a Russian drone breached Romanian airspace, traversing Ukraine and Moldova before returning. Both Romanian and German air forces dispatched jets in response, while Poland temporarily shut down two airports in its southeastern regions following the attacks in western Ukraine.
As the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion approaches in February 2026, negotiations for peace between the two nations remain stalled. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reiterated the unchanged conditions for a peace deal as outlined in the 2024 framework articulated by President Vladimir Putin.
Analysts caution that these deadly drone strikes and invasions present a heightened risk to both civilian lives and infrastructure in western Ukraine. The international community continues to urge restraint and intensified diplomatic measures to avert further humanitarian crises.
With countless residents in Ternopil and surrounding cities grappling with the aftermath of the airstrikes, the ongoing toll of the war continues to escalate, highlighting the pressing necessity for effective conflict resolution and the safeguarding of civilians in Ukraine's war-ravaged areas.
