India Unveils First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

Post by : Meena Hassan

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper train, establishing a rail connection between Howrah, adjacent to Kolkata, and Kamakhya Junction in Guwahati. This overnight service aims to provide a streamlined high-speed rail route between West Bengal and Assam, regions currently gearing up for elections.

The train's launch occurred at Malda Town in West Bengal, while a virtual flagging represented the service’s return journey from Guwahati to Howrah.

Crafted to cater to India’s increasing travel demands, this fully air-conditioned sleeper train promises an airline-like experience at competitive rates. It aims to significantly reduce travel time between Howrah and Guwahati by approximately 2.5 hours, thereby promoting religious tourism in the area.

This high-speed train can achieve speeds up to 180 km/h while operating consistently at 120-130 km/h. Passengers can expect ergonomic sleeping berths and a premium suspension system that ensures a smooth ride. Enhanced hygiene protocols include advanced disinfectant technology that eradicates 99% of germs, and fresh linens and towels for passengers. Safety features include the indigenous Kavach automatic protection system and onboard surveillance mechanisms. Moreover, the train utilizes automatic sliding doors that remain sealed during transit and open only at designated stations.

Comprising local cuisine as part of the ticket fare, passengers will savor Assamese meals on the Kamakhya to Howrah journey and Bengali dishes on the return voyage.

Ticket prices range from Rs 2,300 to Rs 3,600, depending on the class of travel. This new venture signifies a pivotal advancement in the modernization of India's rail services, merging speed, safety, comfort, and local culinary experiences.
