Flights Suspended at Reagan National After Bomb Threat; Service Restored

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Flights at Ronald Reagan National Airport were briefly halted Tuesday after authorities received a bomb threat concerning a United Airlines service from Houston. The alert prompted an emergency response and a temporary suspension of arrivals and departures while security sweeps were carried out.

Officials reported the aircraft was directed to a secured portion of the airfield. Passengers were evacuated and escorted back to the terminal by bus as law enforcement and airport security launched an immediate probe into the threat.

Around 1:30 p.m. ET, airport officials said normal operations resumed once authorities determined there was no active danger. Federal representatives praised the swift coordination between local police, airport staff and federal agencies in managing the situation.

During the interruption, departing flights experienced average delays of about 51 minutes, with some delays extending beyond two hours, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The brief shutdown added to wider travel pressures across the United States, where several airports are dealing with operational impacts linked to an ongoing government shutdown. Many air traffic controllers are working without pay while handling heavier workloads nationwide.

The episode highlighted the importance of rapid-response protocols and cross-agency cooperation in ensuring passenger safety and quickly restoring normal flight operations.
