Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis has addressed Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s choice to forego his traditional winter visit to Florida amidst ongoing trade disputes. Ford pointed to U.S. tariffs impacting Ontario’s automotive and steel industries, although he mentioned he wouldn’t urge others to mirror his decision.
DeSantis emphasized the robust growth in Florida’s tourism sector and the recent victories in sports, pointing out that the Florida Panthers clinched back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025, while Toronto has faced a championship drought since 1967.
Data from Visit Florida indicates that while there was a slight decline in Canadian visitors in 2025, overall tourism figures climbed, with 91% of visitors being American and a notable 11.4% rise in international tourists compared to the prior year.
Ford has urged the people of Ontario to consider local vacation options to bolster Canadian businesses, while asserting that personal choices should not be influenced by political motives.
“Some families may have vacationed in Florida for generations; they should continue to do so. However, I encourage support for local tourism. One individual shouldn’t dictate your life choices,” Ford remarked.
